High-Strength Mechanical Rebar Coupler for 12mm, 16mm & 20mm TMT Bars
High-strength MBT Mechanical Bolted Coupler for small dia TMT bars - 12mm, 16mm & 20mm. Connects fixed bars without threading or welding. Uses high-tensile shear bolts with serrated saddles that bite into rebar for 100% bar-break strength. Perfect for slabs, beams, columns and repair work.
Product Media
MBT Rebar Coupler 12mm, 16mm & 20mm is a mechanical rebar splicing solution designed to connect reinforcement bars through a secure bolted locking mechanism. The coupler uses a robust steel body and high-strength shear bolts to grip and secure the reinforcement bars, providing a practical alternative to conventional lap splicing.
The system is designed for 12mm, 16mm and 20mm TMT reinforcement bars. During installation, the reinforcement bars are inserted into the coupler body to the specified engagement depth and the shear bolts are tightened according to the manufacturer's installation procedure.
Unlike threaded rebar couplers, the MBT bolted connection does not require conventional threading of the reinforcement bar ends. This makes the system suitable for construction applications where quick installation, accessibility and reduced reinforcement congestion are important.
MBT Rebar Couplers can be used in RCC columns, beams, foundations, slabs, shear walls, retaining walls, bridges, flyovers, metro projects, tunnels, industrial structures and other reinforced concrete applications.
The MBT Rebar Coupler 12mm, 16mm & 20mm provides a practical mechanical alternative to conventional reinforcement lap splicing. Its bolted installation system is designed to simplify rebar connection while helping reduce congestion in reinforced concrete structures. It is suitable for contractors, structural engineers, reinforcement fabricators, infrastructure companies and construction projects requiring mechanical rebar splicing.

IS 16172: Reinforcement Couplers for Mechanical Splices of Bars in Concrete.
BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2) / BS 8110: Structural use of concrete.
ACI 318: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (Type 1 & Type 2 Splices).
ISO 15835: Steels for the reinforcement of concrete — Reinforcement couplers for mechanical splices of bars.
Standard Straight MBT Coupler: For joining two bars of equal diameter (12mm-12mm, 16mm-16mm, 20mm-20mm).
Transition / Step-Down MBT Coupler: For splicing bars of different diameters (e.g., 20mm to 16mm or 16mm to 12mm).
End Anchor / Terminal MBT Coupler: Used as an alternative to hooked anchorages in congested structural nodes.
No Bar Preparation: Eliminates the need for threading, welding, or bar-end preparation.
No Bar Rotation: Ideal for connecting fixed bars or in congested areas.
Fast & Simple: Quick installation with standard hand tools.
Consistent Quality: Shear-off bolts ensure correct torque is achieved every time.
Independent of Concrete: The splice strength does not rely on the concrete cover for load transfer.
Ideal for Repair: Perfect for replacing corroded or damaged bar sections.
Tensile Test: 100% bar-break outside coupler zone
Slip Test: Tested at 70% yield load
Visual Test: 100% sheared heads verification
Supplied with mill test certificate and third party NABL lab report per batch.
Tensile Strength: Up to 720 MPa (for 12-25mm bars).
Splice Strength: Achieves 100% of the parent bar's characteristic yield strength.
Ductility: Provides a reliable, full-strength connection. Note that while strong, mechanical splices can exhibit different ductility characteristics compared to continuous bars.
Visual Inspection: The sheared bolt heads provide an instant visual check of correct installation.
Preparation: Ensure rebar ends (12mm, 16mm, or 20mm) are clean, square-cut, and free from loose rust, mud, or debris.
Insertion: Slide the MBT coupler onto the first rebar up to the center stop pin/ridge. Insert the second rebar into the opposite end until both bar ends meet centrally.
Alignment: Hand-tighten all shear bolts to hold the coupler and rebars in straight alignment.
Tightening Sequence: Using a standard ratcheting socket wrench or power impact driver, tighten the bolts systematically starting from the outermost bolts working inward toward the center.
Shear Snap: Continue tightening until the hex head of each bolt snaps off at the calibrated shear groove. The remaining bolt stub remains flush with the coupler body.
A Mechanical Bolted Coupler provides a practical method of connecting reinforcement bars where conventional lap splicing may be unsuitable because of reinforcement congestion, bar diameter, construction sequence or restricted working space.
For project use, the selected coupler should be matched to the bar grade, diameter, required coupler classification and applicable design/testing requirements.
While individual MBT couplers have a higher unit cost than threaded couplers, they are often more cost-effective for smaller projects, repairs, or retrofits. They eliminate the need to rent, power, and maintain rebar-threading machinery, saving substantial upfront mobilization and labor costs.
