MBT Rebar Coupler

MBT Rebar Coupler is a Mechanical Bolted Type coupler designed to join reinforcement bars securely without conventional bar-end threading or welding. It uses a mechanical locking system with high-strength bolts to grip and connect reinforcement bars, making it suitable for construction projects where fast installation and reduced reinforcement congestion are important.

MBT couplers are particularly useful where reinforcement bars cannot be easily rotated or where conventional threaded couplers are difficult to install. The bars are inserted into the coupler and secured using the specified locking bolts and installation procedure.

How Does an MBT Rebar Coupler Work?

How an MBT Coupler Works
The splicing mechanism relies entirely on mechanical clamping and surface friction rather than threads
  1. Insertion: The two reinforcing bars are cleaned and inserted into opposite ends of the coupler sleeve until they meet the internal center stop.
  2. Tightening: High-tensile lock-shear bolts are tightened using a standard wrench or an impact tool.
  3. Gripping: As the bolts tighten, their conical ends embed into the rebar while forcing the rebar to push against the coupler's internal wall, causing the reversed teeth to bite into the steel.
  4. Shear-Off: When the predetermined tightening torque is achieved, the heads of the bolts cleanly shear off. This leaves the remaining bolt flush or slightly proud, providing an instant visual check that the connection has been installed perfectly.

    MBT Rebar Coupler Installation Process

Step 1: Prepare the Reinforcement Bars

Cut the reinforcement bars to the required length and ensure the bar ends are reasonably clean and free from excessive mud, oil, loose scale or other material that could interfere with proper installation.

    Step 2: Position the Coupler

Place the MBT coupler over the ends of the two reinforcement bars to be joined. Ensure that both bars are correctly aligned with the coupler.

Step 3: Insert the Reinforcement Bars

Insert the reinforcement bars into the coupler to the required insertion depth specified by the manufacturer. Correct bar insertion is essential for achieving the required mechanical connection.

Step 4: Check Alignment and Insertion

Before tightening, verify that both bars are properly positioned and aligned inside the coupler. Confirm the required insertion marks or positioning requirements where applicable.

Step 5: Tighten the Locking Bolts

Tighten the mechanical locking/shear bolts using the specified installation sequence and tightening procedure. For shear-bolt designs, tighten the bolts until the specified shear condition is achieved.

Step 6: Inspect the Completed Connection

Visually inspect the completed connection to ensure that the bars are correctly positioned and the locking bolts have been installed according to the specified procedure.

    Step 7: Final Quality Check

Verify the coupler size, reinforcement bar size, bar insertion, alignment and bolt installation before the connected reinforcement is placed into the concrete structure.

    • Useful for RCC and infrastructure projects
    • Easy visual installation inspection
    • Mechanical end-to-end reinforcement connection

    MBT Rebar Coupler – FAQs

    1. What is an MBT Rebar Coupler?

An MBT Rebar Coupler is a Mechanical Bolted Type rebar coupler used to join two reinforcement bars mechanically. It uses a locking-bolt system instead of conventional bar-end threading.

    2. Does an MBT Rebar Coupler require threading?

No. An MBT coupler is designed as a threadless mechanical connection, so conventional threading of the reinforcement bar ends is not required.

    3. What sizes of MBT Rebar Couplers are available?

Surya Engineering can offer MBT Rebar Couplers in different reinforcement bar sizes. If your current product range is 12 mm to 40 mm, the available sizes can include 12, 16, 20, 25, 28, 32, 36 and 40 mm, subject to the actual product specification.

    4. Does an MBT Rebar Coupler require welding?

No. The connection is made mechanically using the coupler and locking bolts, so welding is not required for the mechanical splice.

    5. What tools are required for MBT installation?
Only a standard torque wrench or ratchet wrench. No rebar threading machine, no coupler threading gauge, no electricity needed.

    6. Can MBT Rebar Couplers be used for large-diameter reinforcement bars?

Yes, MBT-type couplers are available for different reinforcement bar diameters. The correct coupler must be selected according to the bar diameter, reinforcement grade, coupler specification and project requirements.

    7. How do I select the correct MBT Rebar Coupler?

Select the coupler based on the reinforcement bar diameter, bar grade, required mechanical performance, project specifications and applicable certification/test requirements. Always verify compatibility before installation.
