1. Bar preparation
The 16 mm reinforcement bar end is prepared according to the manufacturer's procedure.
2. Thread formation

Weight of rebar is calculated by formula: D x D / 162
For 16mm bar:
1 meter of 16mm TMT bar = 1.58 kg
Standard length of one bar is 12 meters, so
One full 16mm bar (12m) = 18.96 kg to 19 kg
This is same for Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550 grade - weight is based on diameter only.
3. What are the different types of rebar couplers?
There are mainly 5 types we manufacture at Surya Engineering:
a) Standard Coupler - Most used. For joining where one bar can rotate. Used for 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm.
b) Positional Coupler - Has two parts with locknut. Used when both bars cannot rotate, for repair and precast work.
c) Transition Coupler - For joining two different diameters, like 16mm to 20mm or 12mm to 16mm.
d) Weldable Coupler - One side has thread for rebar, other side is plain for welding to steel structure or plate.
e) Roll Thread vs Cut Thread - Roll thread is advanced type where threads are made by rolling, not cutting. It keeps 100% bar strength. Cut thread is old type where threads are cut and bar becomes weak. We recommend only roll thread as per IS 16172.
4. What is the price of a 12mm TMT bar coupler?
12mm coupler is smaller than 16mm, so price is slightly less.
Current market price for 12mm roll thread coupler is Rs. 22 to Rs. 30 per piece for bulk order.
12mm is mostly used in slabs and stirrups. Because its size is small, many people use lapping, but for high-rise and Mivan shuttering projects, 12mm coupler is now compulsory to avoid congestion.
